Research Associate

Center for the Humanities in Extended Reality (CHXR) at Albert Dorman Honors College, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)

Position Type: Staff

Position Summary: The Center for the Humanities in Extended Reality (CHXR) seeks a Research Associate to support all aspects of a research project, including developing an online digital platform, coordinating undergraduate research assistants, and providing organizational, writing, and project‑management support for ongoing digital humanities initiatives. The role includes securing additional grant funding.

Essential Functions

The Research Associate will provide digital humanities research support and technical development and consulting. The role requires strong writing capability, extensive knowledge of digital scholarship methods and techniques, and the willingness to explore and develop new skills.

  • Coordinate the workflows of research assistants.
  • Support grant development and manuscript preparation.
  • Organize project documentation and research processes.
  • Facilitate collaboration across administrative, faculty, and community partners.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Unity, immersive experience design (XR), databases and non‑relational storage solutions, web development technologies (JavaScript, CSS, HTML5), and/or machine learning techniques and AI.
Prerequisite Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in digital humanities.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Experience with digital scholarship projects and ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse stakeholders.
  • Willingness and proven ability to learn new skills and technologies beyond existing knowledge.
  • Experience working collaboratively on interdisciplinary digital scholarship projects.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, organizational, and analytical capacities.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted for candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Data visualization, digital humanities, or database experience preferred.
  • Willingness or experience leading undergraduate research projects.
  • Grant‑writing experience.
  • Academic publications or equivalent record.
  • Experience working with honors students and incorporating undergraduates into one's research area preferred.
  • Project management experience.

Salary Information

The negotiated starting annual salary is $43,562.40 (USD). This pay range represents base pay only and excludes additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items.
