Overview

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is dedicated to promoting worker health, safety, and wellbeing, and building capacity for workers and worker organizations to take action to improve working conditions. LOSH offers high-quality training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of both the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

Position Summary

The LOSH Program promotes worker health and safety and builds capacity for workers and worker organizations to act to improve conditions. LOSH offers training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

Responsibilities
  • The Research Associate contributes to LOSH research on worker safety and health and employment issues in California, with a focus on low-wage, immigrant, and/or non-English-speaking workers and those in high-risk industries.
  • Assist with implementing discrete research activities in support of LOSH research initiatives and in close coordination with the LOSH Research Analyst and labor and community-based partners.
  • Assist with project planning and coordination; convene meetings with project contributors.
  • Create research tools in English and Spanish; collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data; summarize and present results for various audiences.
  • Contribute to written reports, publications, and grant proposals.
  • Represent LOSH in community meetings and professional conferences, and participate in LOSH organizational and staff development initiatives.
Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Benefits information is available via UC Benefit package and the UC Total Compensation Estimator.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health, labor movement, and/or participatory action research. (Required)
  • Experience developing surveys and interview guides. (Preferred)
  • Experience administering surveys, conducting interviews, and leading focus groups with workers and/or community audiences. (Required)
  • Experience securing qualitative data from publicly available sources, cleaning datasets, and preparing data for analysis. (Preferred)
  • Experience using Atlas.ti or other qualitative analysis software and experience using Qualtrics, REDCap and/or other programming surveys. (Preferred)
  • Experience using STATA or other statistical software. (Preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work. (Required)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience collaborating with diverse partners from labor, community-based organizations, government agencies, and academia. (Required)
  • Available for occasional early morning, evening and/or weekend activities as determined by operational needs. (Required)
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish. (Required)
  • Possess a valid CA driver's license in good standing with access to a car for local travel and the ability to travel within California. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Master's Degree in Public Health or related field and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
