Job Summary

The CHOICE Lab directed by Dr. Lara Coughlin is seeking a Program Assistant for the Incentives2Quit program. We are looking for someone who is personable, empathetic, self-motivated, and highly organized with strong attention to detail to work on an incentive-based intervention program for cigarette smoking cessation for perinatal Medicaid beneficiaries and dual-enrolled Medicaid-Medicare beneficiaries. Key job responsibilities will include recruiting potential participants and engaging them in the screening and informed consent process, enrolling participants and mailing program materials, delivering the intervention welcome session, monitoring and engaging participants in the program, and collecting data. Participants are recruited remotely using phone, text, and app-based platforms. This role is a great opportunity for interested candidates to gain hands-on clinical research experience before applying to graduate or medical school.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities May Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Delivering brief interventions in real-time with program participants via phone or video conferencing applications
  • Assist with the development of new intervention content
  • Assess, triage, and document risk assessments as needed
  • Complete participant tracking paperwork accurately and efficiently
  • Recruit potential participants, engage them in the screening and consent process
  • Contacting enrolled participants for study/program reminders
  • Requesting, distributing, and documenting transactions of subject incentive payments in accordance with university guidelines
  • Uploading participant data to data repositories for data sharing


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Public Health, or a related field is required.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a research or clinic setting with direct patient/participant contacts and customer care is required.
  • Our team is looking for a Research Assistant who is empathic, personable, and thrives when interacting with participants/patients; has excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; a strong ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the study coordinator, study team, and principal investigator; and can prioritize competing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • The desirable candidate must be comfortable interacting with diverse populations and discussing sensitive topics (substance use, suicide and related mental health concerns) with study participants.


Work Schedule

Our typical work schedule is Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5 PM and is flexible with manager approval. Evening and weekend shifts may be required to accommodate participant and program needs.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

This is a term-limited appointment as the funding structure ends 6/30/2026. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and you will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
