Lab Research Technician, SOM, Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease

Duties & Responsibilities

Research Technicians perform a variety of routine, technical, and administrative responsibilities in support of research at the university. They perform duties such as the following:

  1. Collecting specimens, preparing materials, operating and maintaining equipment, ordering lab supplies, and maintaining inventory.
  2. Assisting with data analysis and report writing.
  3. Setting up and performing experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff.
  4. Assisting with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  5. Maintaining and ordering equipment and supplies.
  6. Helping monitor compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.
  7. Laboratory and instrument maintenance, customer training and support.
  8. Daily bench work involving performing advanced lab technical protocols.
  9. Independently handling and maintaining advanced instrumentation.
  10. Data collection and input into study systems and sponsor database.
  11. Providing timely and courteous responses to queries from patients, faculty and sponsors.
  12. Completing and ensuring accurate effort reporting is recorded.
  13. Case finding, evaluation & abstraction of source documentation, case report form completion, database use & management, data abstraction & organization for presentation/publication.
  14. Utilizing multiple data capture/retrieval systems & interacting with various health care delivery systems to identify, track, evaluate, collate, analyze & submit subject data.
  15. Collaborating closely with the clinical research team to ensure that key federal/state/local regulatory requirements are followed; that institutional operational research objectives are met; and that ethical obligations are kept.
  16. Developing, establishing and maintaining productive relationships with VCU colleagues, all customers and contacts at affiliate sites to achieve essential research outcomes.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  1. Working knowledge of laboratory techniques including blood sample processing, pipetting, and instrument maintenance.
  2. Comfortable utilizing various instruments, techniques and protocols.
  3. Accuracy, precision, and efficiency in work habits are required.
  4. Must be able to use time effectively, multi-task, work independently and be detail-oriented.
  5. Comfortable with handling human samples.
  6. Good computer and communication skills are necessary.
  7. Professionalism and good interpersonal skills are required.
  8. Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.
  9. Relevant lab and/or clinical research experience.
  10. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a diverse environment.
  11. Significant experience in professional experience working in a laboratory setting, specifically handling and performing experiments on mice as part of scientific research.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Bachelors, advanced degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry or Biology strongly preferred.
  2. Experience with research and clinical trials strongly preferred.
  3. Dangerous Goods/IATA Training preferred.
  4. Familiarity with RedCap and Microsoft Excel preferred.
  5. Familiarity with VCU Health preferred.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

Light to medium lifting (up to 40 lb), fast pace, multiple stimulation, intense customer interaction, frequent change, memory, reasoning, hearing, reading, analyzing, logic, and verbal and written communication.

Additional Information:

This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project needs, availability of funds, and performance.
