Job description

The Research Assistant works under minimum supervision applies a broad knowledge of laboratory principles in planning, developing, conducting and evaluating scientific research in a laboratory, clinic, field and/or teaching environment. Incumbents understand the context and implications of the research in order to apply and interpret theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct research in one or more scientific disciplines. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, laboratory management, project management, preparing publications and reports, and communication and instruction. Employees demonstrate and model effective mental concentration, visual attention and manipulative skills. Research Assistant III includes the training and direct supervision of staff, students and others in performing specific techniques or phases of experiments. Incumbents are required to work flexible shifts that may include evenings, week-ends and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Design and execute in vivo pharmacology studies in mouse models of metabolic disorders, including compound dosing, blood sampling, and tissue collection.
  • Perform comprehensive metabolic phenotyping, such as monitoring body weight, food intake, conducting glucose and insulin tolerance tests, and utilizing indirect calorimetry systems.
  • Support the development and optimization of preclinical models relevant to metabolic disease to ensure translational relevance and scientific rigor.
  • Identifies problems, troubleshoots and analyzes variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; modifies, refines or adapts techniques and procedures; modifies and/or adjusts quality control measures.
  • Monitors documentation of results; reviews and recognizes documentation which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; may collaborate with others.
  • Plans and monitors resources needed to operate the laboratory; maintains inventory control; coordinates space, field, equipment and/or facilities;
  • Leads exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction.
  • Executes designated research tasks, making use of selected experiments, equipment, field work, library research, data acquisition and processing, statistical analysis or other investigative techniques.
  • May troubleshoot and modify experimental methods as well as perform data
  • Organizes and summarizes acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques including computer programs.
  • Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation.
  • Assists in grant writing and proposal development.
  • Conducts multiple experiments and is responsible for maintenance of equipment used in those experiments. Is organized, responsible and reports results clearly and efficiently to supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 6+ years of directly related experience.
  • Advanced mouse handling, husbandry skills and bio-methods preferred.
  • Performs statistical analysis; interprets and evaluates results; and compiles data for peer and PI review.
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication
  • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program
  • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism
  • Leads and initiates good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct
  • Exceptional computer skills, ability to develop technical documents, data
  • Demonstrated success in conducting multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project
  • Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to be flexible
  • Consistently maintains a positive work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence the behavior of subordinates and teammates - previous training or supervisory experience preferred
  • Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday)
  • Regular, reliable and consistent attendance

Pay Range: $18.59 - $29.51 per hour, depending upon experience.
