Bayside Health, a public health service in Melbourne, seeks a Research Assistant to support epilepsy-related trials within the Sivathamboo Research Group. You will recruit participants, manage study procedures, and help with data entry, analysis, and manuscript preparation.

The role requires experience with clinical research and working with patients, plus familiarity with EEG and related software. Travel to other sites may occur; some weekend work is possible.

  • Oversee day-to-day study operations and SOPs for the group.

  • Coordinate staff and liaise with clinicians, coordinators and partners.
  • Support manuscript preparation and report adverse events promptly.

The Department

Neurology is a developing specialty within Bayside Health, and recent investment has produced significant growth in this area, particularly with regard to research and clinical trials. Neurology at Alfred Hospital consists of inpatient units and a range of specialised outpatient clinics.

The Role

This research assistant position will contribute to the goals of the Sivathamboo Research Group, based within the Department of Neuroscience, STM. Specifically, they will be responsible for day-to-day operations including conducting research to an excellent standard, describing and/or developing standard operating procedures, risk assessments and safe work instructions for the work performed by lab members, clinical recruitment of participants, training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and junior staff, ordering consumables, data entry, data analysis, and contributing to manuscript preparation. Our group does human clinical research, and therefore demonstrated experience with patients and clinical trials is required. The projects that they will be focusing on will involve wearable devices for epilepsy. They will be responsible for the day-to-day management of clinical trials including identifying possible patients through review of medical records or attendance at epilepsy clinics, consenting patients, completing study procedures in accordance with the study protocol, data entry and review, as well as coordinating staff involved in this study including neurologists and research coordinators, as well as liaising with commercial partners. This position will be based at Alfred Health but may require travel and work at other sites on occasion. Occasional work on the weekends may be required.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience Required
  • Review potential trial participants to confirm eligibility.
  • Attend the ward and clinics as required, for participant recruitment and other study related activities.
  • Completing study procedures according to the protocol.
  • Preparing ethics and governance submissions and amendments in a timely manner.
  • Submitting manuscripts for publication.
  • Reporting any adverse effects in a timely manner.
  • Conduct research relating to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), autonomic function in epilepsy, and cardiorespiratory function in epilepsy.
  • Collect and analyse clinical, demographic, physiological such as EEG, imaging, ECG information, and video.
  • Organisational and time management capabilities; Ability to prioritise tasks, show initiative, and solve complex problems independently.
  • Ability to solve complex problems by using discretion and innovation and the ability to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Well-developed planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks, and set and meet deadlines
  • A demonstrated awareness of the principles of confidentiality, privacy, and information handling.
  • A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and proficiency in the production of high-level work using software such as Profusion EEG and sleep software and specified Alfred Health software programs, with the capability and willingness to learn new packages as appropriate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent teamwork capabilities.
