Job Description
Supporting skilled, administrative, and managerial functions in beef cattle research. Plans and directs phases of research projects. Works with students, staff, and cattle facilities to achieve research objectives.
Responsibilities
- Perform general cattle duties in all facets of a cow/calf operation, including calving, identifying and treating sick cattle, feeding, heat detection, hauling, and weighing.
- Handle cattle in a low-stress manner.
- Manage pastures, heifers, bulls, and stocker cattle.
- Assist in the design, planning, and coordination of experiments for research projects.
- Keep detailed cattle records for calving, breeding, weights, culling, and other data.
- Repair and construct fences; keep cattle facilities clean and in good repair.
- Select and apply standard research techniques and keep detailed records of data.
- Assist undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical, or field staff involved in research.
- Assist with purchasing, reports, invoices, and cataloging records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- BS degree in a relevant field (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
- Computer knowledge.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter, able to work independently with little supervision.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Experience in haying operations.
- Ability to operate tractors and equipment such as hay equipment, fertilizer buggy, trip feeder, planter, sprayer, pasture mower, etc.; ability to drive tractor and operate equipment.
- Ability to pen cattle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with reproductive technologies (estrous synchronization, artificial insemination, ultrasonography) and animal health.
Other Requirements
- Physical labor required; must be able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 60 pounds.
Salary
$45,000.00
