Department : Environmental Data & Governance Initiative

Employment Type : Fixed Term - Part Time

Compensation : $20.00 / hour

Description

In the summer of 2025, the Interviewing Working Group of the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative is seeking to hire a part-time paid research assistant position to help with an on-going study of the "Presidential Transitions and Governance in Federal Environmental and Health Agencies." (More information on our work is available at https : / / envirodatagov.org / interviewing / ) We seek an upper-level undergraduate or recent graduate with training in research ethics, qualitative data analysis, and environmental studies for in-person work in Walla Walla, WA. The ideal candidate will start in June and continue through late August, ideally continuing through March 2026. Pay is $20 / hour and we expect 5-10 hours / week of work. Some of the work can be done remotely but a good portion requires in-person use of a specific computer located on the Whitman College campus.

The research assistantship will involve the following activities :

  • Using a secure, non-networked computer at Whitman to transcribe interviews using a voice-to-text AI-assisted program
  • Correcting, formatting, and de-identifying interview transcripts
  • Coding interview transcripts in Dedoose
  • Participating in research group meetings
  • Handling confidential data with the highest degree of security and confidence
  • Communicating openly and responsively on email, Slack, through documents, and in in-person or online meetings
  • Participating in other aspects of the interview and policy working group, depending on the working group's needs and the assistant's interest

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to complete transcribing work in Walla Walla, WA
  • Ability to protect highly sensitive and confidential data
  • Coursework and / or other training in research methods and research ethics
  • Experience with qualitative data collection, management, and analysis
  • Coursework in or familiarity with environmental studies, environmental policy, history, sociology, anthropology, environmental humanities, or related disciplines
  • Familiarity with Slack and Google Drive; experience with qualitative coding software (such as Dedoose) is desirable

  • Imagine, conceptualize, and move toward environmental data justice;
  • Advocate for improved federal data and information governance policies and practices;
  • Prototype new organizational structures and practices for distributed, collective, effective work rooted in justice.
