Job description

Perform routine animal care duties and organize daily tasks for the field at the Small Ruminant Livestock Facility and cattle farm: – Conduct animal health management (deworming, vaccinations, hoof trimming) – Maintain flock and herd production records (lambing, breeding, weights) – Replacement animal selection – Develop animal feed rations – Manage inventory of supplies for animal care (feed, hay, ear tags, etc.).

Assist with research activities: – Collect research data (weights, fertility records, breeding records) – Collect research samples (blood, semen, feces, forages) – Process research samples (centrifugation, freezing, refrigeration) – Assign animals to treatment groups – Provide animals at correct age and stage of development for research projects – Write periodic reports and perform other related duties as assigned.

Maintain Sheep Research Facility: – Assist with research facility maintenance (fences, pens, pastures, water lines) – Supervise field staff – Manage inventory of tools, hardware, and fence supplies – Help the farm manager and program leader to cover holidays by doing a safety round and feeding the animals on the Sheep Facilities and Cattle Farm.

Assist with public relations activities; participate in workshops and seminars; conduct tours of the sheep research facility.

Required Qualifications

Analysts should have a Bachelor of Science degree and experience in small ruminant and cattle husbandry. Analysts should have experience in research and production of small ruminants and cattle, including breeding, nutrition, genetics, and animal health. Experience in routine animal management and care is desirable.

An analyst should have knowledge and experience in data collection, data entry, data analysis, generating graphs from data, sample collection, and processing samples. An analyst must be capable of collecting data (such as physiological parameters and weights) and samples (such as blood, fecal samples, and hair), as well as processing the samples in the laboratory.

The Analyst should be able to supervise and guide Animal Science field staff on daily tasks, including data and sample collection, organizing weekly tasks, overseeing farm maintenance, and coordinating special projects such as fencing.

Physical Demands

While performing job duties, the employee will be required to work outdoors in hot weather. This position requires the employee to be able to lift 50 lbs (feed sack) and carry it at least 25 yards. Work environment: The noise level will likely be moderate. The work environment is a mix of outdoor and indoor settings.
