Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks a Requirements Management Engineer to implement and sustain a robust RMS for a highly regulated manufacturing environment. You will establish stakeholder-to-design traceability, link design and verification data, and collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.

What You Will Do

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) in Nuclear Production Operations consists of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that support plutonium programs (i.e., pit production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments) across the entire Nuclear Production Operations organization. PRRO is seeking a Requirements Management Engineer to support the selection, implementation, and usage of a requirements management system (RMS) for a highly complex, highly regulated manufacturing environment. This role will focus on establishing requirements traceability from stakeholder requirements through design, manufacturing, verification, and validation. You will work across engineering, manufacturing, and quality organizations to support requirements engineering practices and enable integration between the RMS and other enterprise systems (PLM, document management, manufacturing systems, etc.). This position will primarily be office work with intermittent trips to the shop floor to support requirements gathering and validation activities.

  • Supporting the deployment and configuration of the requirements management system to meet organizational needs
  • Developing and maintaining requirements traceability structures that connect stakeholder requirements to design, test, and as-built verification evidence
  • Supporting engineering teams in creating, linking, and managing requirements within the RMS
  • Co-developing policies and procedures for requirements management practices and data standards
  • Designing and implementing interfaces between the RMS and other enterprise systems (PLM, digital thread, document management)
  • Providing technical support to Nuclear Production workforce in using requirements management tools and methodologies
  • Coordinating training development and delivering training on RMS usage and requirements engineering best practices
  • Creating and maintaining documentation for requirements management processes, workflows, and system configurations
  • Monitoring RMS performance and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Supporting participation in industry standards activities relevant to requirements management
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2
  • Demonstrated knowledge of change and configuration management
  • Experience planning and executing projects of low to moderate complexity
  • Experience creating and using engineering models in at least two domains (mCAD, eCAD, MBSE, FEA, Requirements etc.)
  • Strong documentation skills; demonstrated ability to document technical results in a formal method/format
  • Experience with requirements engineering principles including requirements decomposition, allocation, and traceability
  • Experience creating and managing requirements in at least one domain (systems, software, hardware, manufacturing, test)
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Strong presentation skills
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3
  • Experience implementing or administering requirements management tools
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain requirements traceability across complex projects
  • Experience working with a formal change management process
  • Experience planning and executing projects of moderate to high complexity
  • Demonstrable history of successful project and task execution in teams of at least 4 people
  • Demonstrable history of teaming across organizational boundaries on complex projects
Work Location

The work location for this position is fully onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Education/Experience
R&D Engineer 2

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

R&D Engineer 3

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with requirements engineering standards and frameworks (e.g. ISO 29148)
  • Hands-on experience with requirements management tools (IBM DOORS/DOORS Next, CodeBeamer, PTC RV&S, Jama Connect, or similar platforms)
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements decomposition, and V-model lifecycle approaches
  • Experience with model-based requirements management (e.g. SysML models)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to analyze complex shop floor challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with shop floor personnel and cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive mindset with a passion for driving continuous improvement and operational excellence in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with private industry production in highly regulated sectors (aerospace, defense, automotive, medical devices, pharmaceuticals).
  • Proficient understanding of databases and information models.
  • Familiarity with the product realization process within the nuclear security enterprise

Clearance

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
