Are you an adventurous spirit with a love for the mountain lifestyle? Do you have a nose for news and a gift for storytelling? The Vail Daily, located in the heart of the Colorado High Country, is seeking a versatile reporter who can juggle daily news coverage with longer-term investigative projects. This reporter will cover local government and chase stories impacting topics such as housing, local business, outdoor recreation, climate change, and health. We are looking for someone with one to two years of experience working in a daily journalism environment.

As a reporter in our newsroom, you’ll focus on daily coverage, enterprise stories, and longer-term investigative reporting. The ideal candidate will have excellent reporting skills, the ability to produce timely explanatory pieces, quick analysis of breaking news, and compelling profiles of key community figures. You must be a strategic planner capable of executing coverage plans and pivoting quickly when news develops. Attention to detail is crucial — from plotting coverage and meeting deadlines to thorough research, clear storytelling, and engaging digital content.

At the Vail Daily, we produce award-winning journalism that captures the spirit of Eagle County and strengthens community bonds. In 2022 and 2024, we received the General Excellence award from the Colorado Press Association, along with an Editorial Excellence award in 2024. We are passionate about telling the story of this remarkable place, known worldwide for its stunning beauty, world-class ski resorts, and hospitality. Please note, it snows here — often and generously.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Generating 6-7 stories per week.
  2. Taking photos and videos, and sharing content on social media.
  3. Using social media tools effectively to source stories and increase traffic.
  4. Collaborating with community leaders and newsroom staff.
  5. Adapting to a fast-paced, changing environment.
  6. Ensuring accuracy, fairness, and proper spelling in reporting.
  7. Following the direction of the Vail Daily editor.
  8. Meeting all deadlines without exception.
  9. Filling in for reporting vacancies as needed.
  10. Maintaining ethical standards per editorial guidelines.
  11. Being a team player and assisting where necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in journalism, English, or communications.
  • One year of reporting experience.
  • Availability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Experience with content management systems.
  • Digital photography skills.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Current driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Pay: $22-$24/hour depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage after 60 days, a $500 recreation bonus after six months, a 401(k) plan with company matching after one year, and access to an office ski pass.
