Job summary

City Market in Burlington, VT is seeking a Purchasing & Merchandising Associate to order products for Frozen subdepartments and maintain inventory to meet consumer demand. You will work under the Category and Merchandising Manager to support sales, margins and revenue targets while protecting sensitive financial information.

The role requires strong vendor relations, accurate ordering, and collaboration with store teams.

Qualifications

• Two years buying/receiving grocery retail experience or three years retail experience.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Proficiency in Office 365 with emphasis on Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain vendor relationships to source quality merchandise.
• Manage inventory levels to meet sales demand and optimize stock.
• Prioritize and place orders to meet deadlines and sales goals.
• Collaborate with stockers and managers to ensure departments are fully stocked and customer-friendly.
• Communicate with Category Manager regarding vendor performance, product updates, pricing, signage, and delivery schedules.
• Ensure operational efficiency in communication with Grocery Shift Leads.
• Maintain organized ordering processes and documentation.
• Cross-train in other subdepartments to support buying and merchandising functions.
• Direct and train department stockers as needed.
• Assist with merchandising, stocking, organizing, cleaning, and inventory tasks.
• Work a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional late nights.

Summary

Under the direction of the Category and Merchandising Manager, this position supports the Grocery department by ordering product as necessary for Frozen subdepartments, supporting the Co-op’s objectives for sales and margin by assuring acceptable inventory levels, while meeting consumer demand and minimizing shrink. This role is routinely entrusted with Co-op-wide confidential information necessary to perform its essential duties, including sales and margin targets, financial projections, and strategic plans related to revenue. A high level of discretion and confidentiality is required.

• Communicate regularly with Category and Merchandising Manager regarding vendor performance, product updates, pricing, signage, and delivery schedules.
• Ensure operational efficiency in communication with Grocery Shift Leads.
• Maintain organized ordering processes and documentation.
• Cross-train in other subdepartments to support buying and merchandising functions.
• Direct and train department stockers as needed.
• Assist with merchandising, stocking, organizing, cleaning, and inventory tasks, including periodic audits.
• Work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional late nights

Qualifications

• Two years of buying, receiving, or grocery retail experience required OR 3 years of retail experience required.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Proficiency in Office 365 with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel required.
• Experience with POS applications and inventory management systems preferred.
• Knowledge of natural and conventional foods and the food industry preferred.
