Asphalt Green — a non-profit sports and fitness organization based on Manhattan’s Upper East Side — is currently hiring energetic and experienced Play Coachesfor our Recess Enhancement Program (REP) for the 2025–2026 school year. This unique community program brings active play to NYC public elementary schools during recess.
About REP
REP is a school-based initiative that operates across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx, bringing structured and engaging play to elementary school students during recess.
Current Hiring Priority: QUEENS
We are primarily hiring for Queensschools, with a focus on neighborhoods such as:
Sunnyside, Jamaica, Astoria Ditmars, Astoria, East Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, and Flushing.
We also have limited availabilityfor coach positions in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx.
Play Coach Responsibilities:
Lead fun and structured recess sessions for elementary school students.
Introduce inclusive games and promote active play.
Encourage positive conflict resolution among students.
Attend regular staff trainings and game-sharing sessions.
Must be available Monday–Friday, between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM(up to 3 hours/day), from September 2, 2025 to June 2026.
Must be willing and able to travel to schools in Queens.
Please note:Work and orientation for this role will begin on September 2, 2025.
The Ideal Candidate:
Has experience working with youth in schools, athletics, or group settings.
Is reliable, enthusiastic, and confident leading games.
Brings a positive attitude and strong leadership skills.
Enjoys being outdoors, playing sports, and promoting teamwork.
Experience with NYC public schools or at-risk youth is a plus.
Additional Info:
Candidates who pass the interview will be fingerprinted by the NYC Department of Education — Asphalt Green covers the cost.
Employment is contingent on DOE background clearance (PETS system).
Selected applicants will be invited to a group interview, where you'll demonstrate a recess game.
