Job summary

The City of Modesto is seeking a Building Inspector I/II to join the Rental Housing Safety Program. Inspect properties for building, safety, maintenance, and habitability compliance and work with owners, managers, tenants, and the public to achieve code compliance.

Successful candidates will have four years of journey-level construction experience in trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or HVAC and an Associate’s degree in building inspection technology or a related field; a

Qualifications

Four years of journey-level construction experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical systems (HVAC), or related field.
Equivalent to an Associate’s degree in building inspection technology or related field.
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Certified Building Inspector certificate issued by the ICC by the end of probationary period.

Responsibilities

Inspect rental properties to identify building, safety, maintenance, and habitability deficiencies and assess code compliance.
Help protect health, safety and welfare of Modesto residents by identifying unsafe housing conditions and working with owners to correct violations.
Conduct follow-up inspections to verify repairs and compliance.
Assist with new construction inspections to ensure safety of new buildings.
Spend significant time in the field conducting inspections and communicating with property owners and residents.
