Description

Burns & McDonnell's operation in the Great Lakes Region is seeking a motivated seller-doer with strong environmental permitting and natural resources experience on wind and solar projects to continue growing our Renewable permitting practice. The position will report to the Chicago Natural and Cultural Resources Department Manager but can sit in any of our Chicago, Detroit or Madison, WI, offices. It will primarily support ongoing projects in the Midwest but offers opportunities to support renewable work throughout the U.S.

This role is responsible for federal, state, and local permitting activities to facilitate the construction of renewable facilities in the Midwest. Responsibilities include business development, proposal development, marketing, developing permitting strategies and schedules, managing resource survey activities, participating in public meetings, negotiating with regulatory agencies, and managing construction, contracts, schedules, and budgets.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing permitting and compliance for renewable facilities, including federal, state, and local permits.
  • Providing project management to ensure projects are completed within budget and schedule, meeting client expectations.
  • Offering technical guidance to project teams for regulatory compliance by developing and implementing permit acquisition strategies.
  • Managing document and technical report preparation.
  • Developing change management strategies with regulatory agencies and assessing associated risks.
  • Participating in business development through sales and marketing planning, client account management, contract negotiations, and technical proposal development.
  • Managing construction compliance and supporting permit implementation.
  • Mentoring less experienced staff and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in natural resources, environmental science, or related field from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Effective interaction with industry, government, and public stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations for renewable projects in the Midwest.
  • Experience with state siting processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge of wetlands, threatened and endangered species, stormwater, cultural resources, NEPA, and related regulations is desired.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, collaborative, and capable of managing multiple projects under pressure.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary range: $100,000 - $390,000 annually, based on experience and location. Benefits include insurance, disability, time off, wellness programs, and participation in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and 401(k).

This position is full-time, with travel expected up to 25%. The role is based in Chicago, Detroit, or Madison, WI, with support for projects across the U.S.
