Job description

The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Renewables Electrical Lead Engineer. In this role, you will act as a project lead on battery energy storage systems (BESS) and wind projects. You will serve as a technical leader, applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to complex renewable energy projects. This role will be a strategic contributor to the growth of our Renewables Lifeline Sector. Qualified candidates may work remotely from any location in the US or from any of Ulteig's existing office locations.

What You'll Do

  1. Develop and review electrical designs for wind and battery energy storage projects, including one-line diagrams, grounding, protection schemes, and cable sizing.
  2. Serve as the technical lead on projects, coordinating with internal teams, external partners, and clients to ensure technical excellence and project success.
  3. Perform electrical studies such as cable ampacity, energy loss, short-circuit analysis, protection coordination, and grounding analysis.
  4. Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, inverters, and batteries.
  5. Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, including field inspections and troubleshooting.
  6. Conduct technical reviews and enforce quality control to maintain high standards in design and implementation.
  7. Provide technical guidance during construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure the design intent is achieved in the field.
  8. Research new technologies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project performance and efficiency.
  9. Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA, NESC).
  10. Participate in client meetings, present technical information clearly, and support proposal development with technical input.

What We Expect from You

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering required. ABET-accredited program or equivalent required.
  2. PE or P. Eng. license required.
  3. 10+ years of experience preferred in renewable energy, power systems, or a related industry.
  4. Experience with engineering software such as ETAP, Easypower, PSCAD, CYME, AutoCAD, or similar.
  5. Experience leading projects and/or teams.
  6. Strong knowledge of wind energy systems and battery energy storage systems and technologies.
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  8. Capable of reviewing and producing design drawings, including General Arrangements, Elevations, Cable and Conduit Plans, Grounding Plans, Physical Connection Details, and schematics.
  9. Ability to perform AC & DC studies using electrical modelling software. Proficiency with electrical modeling software (e.g., ETAP, Easypower, CYME, CDEGS, or similar).
  10. Knowledge of the NEC, NESC, and industry standards.
  11. Proven experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  12. Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously within tight schedules.
  13. Ability to maintain project schedules and meet deadlines.
  14. Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  15. Analytical, self-motivated, and capable of working in a high-paced environment with a positive attitude.
  16. Up to 15% travel required.
  17. Valid driver's license preferred.
  18. Reliable high-speed internet if working remotely.
  19. Legal authorization to work in the US.
