Job Description

This is a Temporary to possible Permanent position.

The remote lead cook is responsible for managing assigned kitchen staff by fostering a positive and safe working environment. They ensure all staff receive proper training, guidance, and leadership to perform their duties effectively and deliver quality services. All responsibilities are to be performed in alignment with NMS’s mission, vision, values, and departmental policies, practices, and procedures.

Responsibilities
  1. Cooks or prepares food according to recipes.
  2. Prepares, cooks, and serves meats, sauces, vegetables, soups, and other foods.
  3. Carves meats.
  4. Performs all main line food production duties as assigned per shift.
  5. Cooks various food items such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, drinks, sandwiches, salads, and more.
  6. Prepares a variety of bakery products suitable for a remote camp setting.
  7. Handles pastry preparations including mixing, baking, and frying.
  8. Selects and develops recipes based on food type and personal expertise.
  9. Maintains cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas.
  10. Ensures effective communication and relations with clients and staff to improve service quality.
  11. Adheres to NMS safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  12. Coordinates safety activities and conducts safety meetings to ensure compliance.
  13. Disseminates safety information and monitors safety issues in the workplace.
  14. Assists in investigating accidents or incidents as needed.
  15. Supervises up to 30 staff, either directly or through supervisory personnel, in a remote camp environment.
  16. Reports any safety or sanitation issues to supervisors.
  17. Performs other relevant duties to support department or unit success.
Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma or GED, supplemented with formal training or equivalent experience.
  2. Minimum five (5) years of related restaurant cooking experience, demonstrating high-volume food production and supervisory skills.
  3. Ability to instruct, train, and multitask effectively.
  4. Must obtain an Alaska Food Workers Card and/or ServSafe Certification upon hire.
  5. Must pass pre-employment requirements including drug testing, physical, and hearing assessments.
  6. Ability to work as part of a team and make decisions independently.
  7. Ability to stand for 12 hours per shift and live in dormitory settings adhering to cleanliness standards.
  8. Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).

For candidates residing outside Anchorage:

Pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s residence, with travel expenses paid by the employee.

For Alaska residents: Testing will be scheduled within the state unless regional service limitations apply.

Travel to remote locations: Employees are responsible for expenses related to travel to the point of hire (Anchorage) for company-paid trips to remote camps.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors and outdoors, often in Arctic conditions.

Noise level: Moderate to loud.

Environment varies by facility.

Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, and other physical activities described in detail.

Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.

Physical Fitness Test Requirements
  • Lift, carry, push, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs, and perform other physical tasks as specified.
