Job summary

Whatnot is expanding its Ads engineering team to build the live marketplace’s advertising infrastructure at scale. You will architect and own low-latency backend systems for auctions, pricing, pacing, and real-time decision making, collaborating closely with product, ML, and infrastructure teams.

You’ll lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and steer projects from inception through production, while ensuring reliability and platform health across services that power seller and buyer experiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years of backend/distributed systems engineering experience for Staff or 10+ for Senior Staff.
• Strong mastery of distributed systems fundamentals.
• Experience with high-throughput, low-latency services and stream processing.

Responsibilities

• Architect and lead high-throughput, low-latency backend systems powering ad auctions and bidding.
• Design auction mechanisms balancing seller value and buyer experience.
• Build services for budget management, forecasting, and measurement.
• Develop integrations between real-time auction services, ML models, data pipelines, and marketplace systems.
• Own performance, resilience, and observability of critical services.
