Job summary

American Institutes for Research is seeking a part-time Senior Researcher to support our International Development program. The role offers US-based remote or office options, with leadership across research and evaluation projects to improve outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.

You will guide study design, data collection, analysis, and client engagement while translating findings into actionable insights for policy and practice.

Qualifications

• PhD in Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Public Policy, International Development or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s with 7+ years of relevant experience.
• Firm understanding of implementation science and applied research.
• Ability to develop work plans and timelines from big ideas.
• Experience in contract research or evaluation organizations.
• Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative data collection and analysis using common tools.
• Experience leading project or task teams and managing client relationships.
• Experience with business pursuit (grants/proposals) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day project operations as principal investigator, project director, or task lead.
• Lead collaborative teams with timelines, staffing, and deliverables on time and within budget.
• Identify research problems and design studies to address key questions.
• Apply subject-matter expertise to design relevant research projects.
• Develop study designs with clear research questions and analytic plans.
• Lead and contribute to research proposals for federal, state, foundations, and clients.
• Devise innovative solutions to practical challenges in applied research.
• Oversee data collection and analysis efforts.
• Supervise qualitative and/or quantitative data collection tools and activities.
• Communicate study progress and findings clearly for clients and stakeholders.
• Prepare reports, briefs, and visualizations to present findings.
• Manage client and partner relationships and represent AIR professionally.
