Job Description
The Remote Safety Manager establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment. This position primarily focuses on Remote Site Safety support but also supports other aspects of NMS business.
Responsibilities
- Conduct studies and job safety analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards related to health, safety, and environment for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
- Perform IH monitoring tasks including air sampling and sound level surveys.
- Provide field support to remote and in-town company organizations.
- Manage an assigned area such as a portion of the North Slope, Red Dog, or similar area.
- Include routine work in various Alaskan communities as needed.
- Serve as department head of the North Slope Safety Department.
- Coordinate and lead all incident and accident investigations on the North Slope, manage cases of injured employees, and handle final reporting.
- Supervise safety specialists and advisors assigned to operating units.
- Conduct safety, hygiene, and fire code compliance inspections at camps.
- Perform internal audits on the Environmental Management System.
- Assess job safety training needs and develop relevant training modules based on gap analysis.
- Implement safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Consult with managers on equipment design, safety programs, and safety-related systems.
- Assist managers in developing and implementing safety procedures.
- Support task observation systems.
- Inspect facilities to identify hazards and unsafe behaviors, recommending corrective actions.
- Act as a subject matter expert for safety, health, and environmental code compliance within assigned units.
- Coordinate with NMS Vice President HSSE on safety programs to ensure corporate compliance.
- Alert managers and employees about hazards related to toxic fumes, chemicals, or other hazards.
- Approve new chemicals introduced into operations.
- Participate in accident investigations and assist in preparing materials for hearings, lawsuits, and insurance claims.
- Design, supervise, and deliver safety training classes and programs.
- Assist in safety meetings and PPE hazard assessments.
- Conduct safety classes across Alaska and NMS.
- Prepare and display safety exhibits for conferences and industry events.
- Represent the organization in safety groups and with regulatory agencies.
- Maintain safety records and files.
- Assist in determining OSHA incident statuses.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences (e.g., industrial hygiene, safety engineering, business management) or equivalent experience with technical safety training and four years of related experience.
- At least two years of industrial safety experience across multiple disciplines.
- Certifications such as Occupational Safety and Health Technician, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Registered Sanitarian.
- Knowledge of CFR 29, 49, 58, AKOSH regulations, HACCP, and industrial hygiene principles; HAZWOPER instructor status is desirable.
- Food sanitation instructor or certification within six months of hire.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office; testing required.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass pre-employment tests including drug, physical, and hearing assessments.
- Ability to work as part of a team, make decisions independently, and stay on feet for 12-hour shifts.
- Willingness to live in dormitory-style remote camp settings and meet cleanliness standards.
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Adherence to safety guidelines and regulations.
Additional Information
Residing outside Anchorage: Pre-employment testing in Anchorage; travel expenses covered by employees. For Alaska residents, testing may be near residence. Flights to remote locations are at employee expense.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoor/Outdoor, Arctic conditions frequently.
Noise: Moderate to loud.
Environment: Remote camp setting with physical demands including standing, walking, climbing, and exposure to chemicals and fumes.
Travel: Required to travel by plane or bus to remote camps.
Physical: Must pass a Fit For Duty test, with specific lifting, carrying, climbing, and kneeling requirements outlined.
