Job summary

The Many Brains Project is seeking a Research Engineer to advance cognitive science research, psychometrics, and data systems within a fully remote U.S.-based role. You will build tools, analytics, and infrastructure to support scalable cognitive testing and open research resources.

Ideal candidates hold a PhD or advanced degree and bring strong quantitative skills, programming experience, and a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration in a mission-driven nonprofit.

Qualifications

  • PhD or advanced degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, computational social science, biostatistics, or related field.
  • Strong quantitative and statistical background required.
  • Experience programming in JavaScript, Python, R, or similar languages.
  • Experience working with behavioral, cognitive, or longitudinal datasets.
  • Familiarity with psychometrics, experimental design, or digital assessment methods.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of cognitive assessment tools and pipelines.
  • Assist psychometric evaluation, validation, and normative modeling.
  • Build and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations.
  • Document cognitive tests, datasets, and workflows for reproducibility.
  • Contribute to frontend and/or backend software development.
  • Maintain scientific infrastructure and tooling.
  • Collaborate with external researchers on study design and implementation.
  • Participate in debugging, QA, and software testing efforts.
  • Improve internal tools and workflows for efficiency.
  • Provide technical support for collaborators and partners.
