Job summary

I Can Do That! Performing Arts Center seeks a creative Lighting Designer to design and implement lighting for KIDS and SHOWCASE productions.

This contract/project-based role involves pre-production design work, load-in, programming, and tech-week participation with The Village Theatre as the venue. The ideal candidate has experience designing and programming theatrical lighting, knowledge of lighting equipment and safety, and the ability to collaborate with directors and youth performers.

Qualifications

• Experience designing and programming theatrical lighting.
• Knowledge of theatrical lighting equipment, fixtures, consoles, and basic electrical safety.
• Ability to hang, focus, and adjust theatrical lighting equipment.
• Strong artistic instincts and understanding of storytelling through lighting.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work effectively with directors, choreographers, designers, technicians, and youth performers.
• Flexible, positive, and solutions-oriented in fast-paced tech environments.
• Ability to work independently while incorporating feedback.
• Experience with musical theatre, youth theatre, dance, or educational performing arts is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Meet with directors and production team to discuss vision, lighting needs, color palette, mood, and effects.
• Develop a preliminary lighting concept for production, venue, scenery, and equipment.
• Attend designer runs and production meetings as needed.
• Participate in lighting paper tech at load-in.
• Create and organize lighting cues for tech rehearsals.
• Communicate lighting needs and solutions to the team.
• Attend load-in and adjust lighting with Village Theatre technicians.
• Program the lighting console and establish cues.
• Make adjustments based on set, staging, and director feedback.
• Be available remotely/on-call during performances; additional compensation if runs every show.
