Remote Principal AI/ML Platform Engineer

Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Principal Engineer for Optum AI Platforms to design, build and operate an enterprise AI platform. You will own end-to-end services, APIs and tooling, with focus on PHI-ready model access and scalable inference across multiple products.

You will collaborate across Platform Enablement, product management, design, security, privacy and external partners, setting engineering standards and driving robust, maintainable systems for health care workloads.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• 5+ years designing distributed services and platform-level APIs.
• Hands-on experience with ML/AI or data-intensive systems in production.
• Proficient in Python and at least one other production language.

Responsibilities

• Design, code, test, debug and maintain AI platform services from design to production.
• Develop APIs, SDKs, client libraries, and versioning for internal and external use.
• Build and operate the agent harness and runtime with orchestration and retries.
• Implement cost-aware, scalable inference routing and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with security, privacy, and legal stakeholders to meet PHI controls.
