Job summary

Astrix is seeking a part-time Machine Learning Engineer for its AI for Drug Discovery team. Remote within the U.S.

or Canada, the role focuses on translating computational concepts into ML solutions and building baselines for drug discovery pilots. Responsibilities include developing ML pipelines, graph-based prototypes, and scalable data infrastructure, with a 16-hour weekly commitment under a W2 contract.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of hands-on ML engineering with advanced degree in CS/BI/Computational Biology or related fields.
• 5+ years of practical experience building and deploying end-to-end ML pipelines may substitute for an advanced degree.
• Authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
• W-2 employment eligibility.
• Strong experience developing applied ML models and baselines (Scikit-learn).
• Proficient in Python, Pandas, and SQL.
• Ability to translate scientific/biological problems into ML formulations.
• Experience building proofs-of-concept and production ML workflows.
• Strong communication with technical and scientific stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Build interim data pipelines transforming complex datasets into ML-ready formats.
• Partner with Data Engineering to design scalable database/workflows.
• Develop, train, tune, and evaluate ML baseline models across biological pilot projects.
• Create graph-based ML prototypes to support modeling and drug discovery.
• Translate ML concepts into practical proofs-of-concept within 3–4 months.
• Iterate models based on guidance from ML architects and scientists.
• Package ML codebases into reusable tools for biologists to run models.
• Communicate ML results to non-ML experts including biologists.
