About the Role

Our client, a global leader in cloud-native application development, is seeking a visionary Lead Software Architect to join their fully remote, distributed team. This senior role is crucial for defining and guiding the technical direction of complex software systems, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and align with business objectives. You will be responsible for high-level design decisions, setting architectural standards, and mentoring engineering teams. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems, a deep understanding of various architectural patterns, and a passion for innovation. This is a fully remote position, offering unparalleled flexibility and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects from anywhere, while contributing to projects that may have operational links to regions such as Upington, Northern Cape .

Key Responsibilities

• Define and communicate the overall software architecture and technical vision.
• Design scalable, resilient, and secure software systems and microservices.
• Establish architectural standards, patterns, and best practices.
• Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to development teams.
• Evaluate and select appropriate technologies and frameworks for projects.
• Conduct architectural reviews and ensure adherence to established standards.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks and challenges.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends in software architecture.
• Champion a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years in a software architecture role.
• Proven experience designing and implementing complex, high-traffic distributed systems.
• Deep knowledge of various architectural styles (microservices, event-driven, etc.).
• Proficiency in multiple programming languages and technologies.
• Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-native principles.
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience working in a fully remote environment.
• Familiarity with the South African technology landscape, possibly including areas near Upington, Northern Cape , is an advantage.
