Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a senior leader to build and mentor a distributed engineering organization in San Francisco. You will drive AI measurement frameworks, optimize AI toolchains, and oversee scalable compute and runtime infrastructure for developer tooling.

You will partner with product, TPMs, and designers to shape strategy and roadmaps, while fostering a culture of learning, experimentation, and operational rigor across multiple time zones.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams.
• 2+ years of experience managing other engineering managers or leading teams of senior/principal engineers.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong background in distributed systems, developer platforms, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), or developer tooling.
• Experience with applied AI/ML systems, LLMs, AI agents, MCP tooling, RAG, or AI evaluation frameworks.
• Proven ability to partner with product managers, TPMs, and designers to shape product and platform strategy.
• Track record of operating in distributed, asynchronous global engineering environments across multiple time zones.
• Experience implementing DevOps, CI/CD, and site reliability best practices.
• Eagerness to foster a culture of continuous learning, experimentation, and operational rigor.

Responsibilities

• Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing distributed team of engineering managers, principal engineers, and senior software engineers.
• Drive AI Measurement & Evaluation by building frameworks that measure AI tools and agents value across codebases and workflows.
• Optimize AI effectiveness and context retrieval pipelines, reduce unit costs while improving model accuracy and reliability.
• Build and operate scalable, resilient compute and runtime infrastructure for agentic workflows and developer tooling.
• Be the engineering voice in quarterly planning, capacity allocation, and long-term roadmaps.
• Collaborate with executive leadership, product management, and cross-functional partners to productize AI platform capabilities.
• Foster an open, high-trust, operationally mature engineering culture with high standards of technical excellence and psychological safety.

In this role, you will:

Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing, distributed full-stack engineering team across levels in global locations.

Drive full-stack developer experience and platform capabilities across the design system, championing theming infrastructure, rapid prototyping tools, AI-powered accessibility (A11y) remediation, and developer tooling that unblock product teams to build high-quality experiences faster.

Scale and evolve Atlassian's in-house translation and localization platform, improving translation quality, latency, and adoption across product surfaces to support global customer experiences.

Partner with design, product, and engineering peers to embed accessibility, internationalization, and quality standards directly into platform tools and automated guardrails.

Drive operational excellence, release hygiene, and governance across shared packages and services, balancing platform stability with fast developer iteration.

Be the engineering anchor in triad planning with Design, Product Management, and TPM partners, driving roadmap alignment and quarterly capacity allocation.

Cultivate an open, high-trust engineering culture focused on craft excellence, psychological safety, and continuous technical growth.

Your background:

5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams in platform or full-stack domains.

Proven track record leading senior and principal engineers, guiding execution, and mentoring talent within the team.

Experience with design system infrastructure, developer platforms, prototyping tooling, localization systems, or AI-assisted developer workflows at scale.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with design managers, product managers, and TPMs to balance design quality with platform scalability and developer velocity.

Track record of leading distributed, asynchronous engineering teams across multiple time zones.

Passion for technical mentorship, operational rigor, and building high-trust team cultures.

In The United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:

Zone A: $209,700 - $273,775

Zone B: $188,730 - $246,398

Zone C: $174,051 - $227,233
