Qualifications

• Native Japanese speaker with kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
• Experience in interpretation, journalism, transcription, translation, or editorial work.
• Exact character-level accuracy; prioritize precision over speed.
• Systematic approach using a consistent taxonomy.
• Comfort with vertical text and multi-column layouts.

Responsibilities

• Source Japanese PDFs with multimodal elements and record origins.
• Annotate structure by bounding regions and assigning component types.
• Record relationships by linking regions to parent figures/tables.
• Transcribe faithfully, reproducing all text, including kanji and kana.
• Capture page metadata and flags for tables/handwriting.
• Review a colleague's work end-to-end by a second Japanese expert.
