Job summary

Flatwater Free Press, Nebraska’s independent nonprofit newsroom, seeks an enterprising reporter to join the Open Campus community college accountability initiative. The reporter will examine community colleges, governance, funding, outcomes, and their role in workforce development across the state, from Omaha to the Panhandle.

• Strong reporting and writing skills.
• Experience using data and public records.
• Strong news judgment and ability to develop sources.
• Ability to meet deadlines and follow editorial guidelines.
• Interest in connecting with diverse and underserved communities across Nebraska.

• An experimental mindset and openness to new storytelling formats.

Responsibilities

• Report and write accountability and explanatory stories about Nebraska’s community college systems.
• Leverage data and public records to strengthen reporting.
• Work closely with Open Campus and Flatwater Free Press staff.
• Develop high-impact community college issues for readers.
• Lead partnerships with media outlets and community groups across Nebraska.
