Job summary

Ontrac Solutions in Chicago is seeking an experienced backend engineer to build AI-driven workflows and metadata engines on a Go/AWS stack. You'll read and extend a real production codebase that serves live users.

You’ll own key components like metadata engine, ownership reassignment, and inventory for agents and MCP servers, with emphasis on testing and safe refactoring.

Strong preference for 5+ years backend experience, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and agile delivery in a remote US team.

Qualifications

• 5+ years professional backend software engineering.
• Go as a working language — you’ve built and shipped scalable backend services and APIs in it.
• PostgreSQL — schema design and real querying.
• MongoDB — schema design and real querying.
• AWS — working knowledge of the services plus their client libraries and APIs.
• Agentic, AI-driven workflows you have designed, implemented and tuned.
• Asset discovery / ingestion tooling — e.g. CloudQuery for aggregating cloud resources and metadata.
• Data classification standards, dependency mapping, functional framework mapping.
• Navigating a large, unfamiliar codebase to refactor or decommission legacy code without regressing behaviour.
• Unit and integration testing for backend components, as standard practice.
• Agile/Scrum delivery — sprints, stand-ups, retrospectives.
• Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• AI-suggested metadata engine development and tuning across the active project estate.
• Automated ownership reassignment and deprecation logic.
• Agent and MCP inventory across production and endpoint environments, accessible programmatically.
• First-party product inventory and critical-user-journey mapping.
• Legacy refactoring and decommissioning with comprehensive tests.
• Sprint delivery alongside program and customer teams.
