Job summary

Greenhouse is seeking an experienced software engineer for a roughly 12-month independent contractor engagement, supporting Talent Matching and related employer-facing experiences. You’ll work across the stack to build product capabilities, focusing on OpenSearch/Elasticsearch and practical AI applications to improve search relevance and matching quality.

The role requires 5+ years of production code experience, strong Ruby, Java or Python skills (Ruby on Rails preferred), and solid React

Qualifications

• 5+ years of production code experience.
• Ruby, C#, Java, or Python; Ruby on Rails preferred.
• Strong JavaScript or TypeScript, with React.
• Full-stack across backend APIs, data modeling, and modern frontend.
• OpenSearch or Elasticsearch in production with indexing and relevance tuning.
• Experience with search, ranking, or matching systems.
• Practical AI/ML techniques in production (embeddings, semantic search).
• Experience collaborating with Product and Design in ambiguous problems.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to define requirements and build product experiences from conception through delivery.
• Build and improve full-stack experiences for Talent Matching, Talent Rediscovery, and related talent discovery workflows.
• Design and ship search-backed capabilities using OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including indexing, query design, relevance tuning, ranking, and semantic retrieval.
• Develop matching systems that combine keyword, structured, semantic, and AI/ML signals to improve match quality.
• Partner with Applied ML and cross-functional engineering teams to evaluate trade-offs across relevance, latency, reliability, infrastructure cost, and user trust.
• Build evaluation, observability, testing, and feedback mechanisms to continuously improve matching quality.
• Develop clean, efficient, maintainable, and scalable production code for core services.
• Contribute to code reviews and engineering practices.
