Job summary

Arceus is seeking an employment attorney to serve as fractional counsel for fast-growing tech companies. You will handle a broad range of everyday employment questions, from hiring to leaves and investigations, while helping build templates, playbooks, and AI-assisted workflows to speed and improve responses.

You should have 5+ years of employment law experience, with in-house or startup-focused advising, and strong practical, risk-aware counsel.

Qualifications

• J.D. and bar admission in good standing; California/New York preferred.
• 5+ years employment law experience advising employers, not just litigation.
• In-house employment counsel experience or advising startups/growth-stage companies.
• Broad, hands-on counseling across the full employee lifecycle; multi-state experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication, especially with non-lawyers.

Responsibilities

• Hiring and onboarding: offer letters, employment agreements, contractor agreements, confidentiality and invention assignments, background checks.
• Classification and wage-and-hour: employee vs. contractor, exempt vs. non-exempt, overtime, pay transparency rules.
• Multi-state and remote workforce: state registration, policies, and coordination with EORs for international hires.
• Policies and handbooks: draft and update remote-work, leave, and AI-use policies.
• Leave and accommodations: FMLA/state leave, disability and pregnancy accommodations, return-to-work questions.
• Performance and separations: performance plans, terminations, release agreements, WARN analysis.
• Workplace issues: triage complaints, internal investigations, harassment/discrimination risk.
• Restrictive covenants and equity touchpoints: non-solicits, state non-compete limits, equity grants coordination.
• Scale the practice: create templates and playbooks; collaborate with product/engineering to improve tools.
