Job summary

State of South Carolina’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation seeks a Deputy State Fire Marshal. Telecommuting is primary, with periodic field inspections and reporting to a central or regional office.

You will review plans, interpret codes, and support public safety during construction and renovation projects. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's in Engineering and relevant experience; preferred registrations include ICC Fire Inspector I and Fire Plans Examiner.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering and relevant intermediate-level engineering work experience for Engineer III.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and intermediate-level engineering or construction management experience for Engineering Associate III.
• Must obtain ICC Fire Inspector I and Fire Plans Examiner certifications within six months if not already certified.
• Strong knowledge of building construction codes, laws, and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as non-uniformed Deputy State Fire Marshal and perform engineering evaluations and analysis.
• Review architectural and engineering drawings for code compliance.
• Assist professionals and officials with code interpretations and enforcement duties.
• Arrange conferences with government officials, design professionals, contractors, and owners to resolve code issues.
• Conduct or assist with field inspections related to plan approvals and monitor construction.
• Provide training and review to ensure quality, accuracy and efficiency of work.
• Provide technical assistance to the Office of State Fire Marshal and support agency missions.
