Job summary

Peraton in Cedar Rapids, IA is seeking a full-time background investigator to support Federal Investigative Standards investigations. The role requires local and occasional out-of-area travel and home-office readiness as part of a nationwide program.

You will conduct interviews, perform records reviews, and prepare concise, accurate reports for government review, while maintaining confidentiality and professional conduct in field operations.

Qualifications

• 4 years of general work experience or a bachelor’s degree; federal background investigations experience preferred
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret eligible clearance; Active federal background investigation with a T5 adjudication preferred
• U.S. citizenship
• Daily travel required locally and outside of primary work area as needed
• Home office required
• TDY/remote travel 14–30 days may be required
• Must reside within the mileage requirement posted in the job description
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; driving may be checked
• Must carry motor vehicle insurance
• Typing at least 40 words per minute and able to use multiple computer programs
• Able to speak and listen clearly, record and transcribe with high accuracy
• Proficient grammar and writing to submit high-quality reports
• Interact professionally, meet attendance and punctuality expectations, and pay attention to detail in fieldwork
• Maintain confidentiality, ethics and integrity
• Professional attire required
• Able to lift/move up to 10 pounds, climb stairs, walk extensively, and drive in adverse/night conditions

Responsibilities

• Complete a 6–7 week new Investigator training virtually and in person to be certified in the Federal Investigative Standards
• Travel daily for in-person background investigations to assess employment suitability for access to sensitive government information
• Schedule and conduct face-to-face interviews with subjects, neighbors, employers, friends and family
• Conduct record searches at police agencies, courthouses, schools, financial and health facilities
• Type and report all information in a government-issued computer system
• Work independently and as part of a team with a Field Manager
