Job summary

American Farmland Trust is seeking a New York Program Associate to advance farm-to-school and farm-to-institution initiatives. This fully remote role collaborates with the NY/NJ Deputy Director and program team to plan and execute project activities, foster partnerships with schools, farmers, and community organizations, and provide coaching and technical assistance to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree and minimum 3 years of related work experience in food systems, farm to institution, value chains, or related fields.
  • Experience providing technical assistance or program resources to farmers and producers.
  • Strong project coordination skills across multiple projects.
  • Ability to work independently with remote supervision and collaboratively on multiple projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including facilitation and potential public speaking.
  • Proven ability to build diverse stakeholder relationships.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for food systems aligned with AFT's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning and execution of the New York Farm to School Institute and related nine-month program activities.
  • Develop structured processes to help farmers sell to schools and other institutions.
  • Provide technical assistance to farmers and K-12 schools on local NY foods and procurement.
  • Design and deliver workshops, trainings, and professional development events.
  • Build and coordinate a network of alumni and manage communications platforms as needed.
  • Establish strong relationships with farmers, food hubs, processors, distributors, and school staff.
  • Support policy-related outreach and advocacy in NYS for farm to institution programs.
  • Develop evaluation metrics and conduct light data analysis for program events and outcomes.
  • Identify storytelling opportunities along the farm-to-institution value chain.
  • Represent AFT at workshops, coalitions, conferences, and trainings.
