Job Description
This Remote Cook’s Helper assists in food preparation, special projects, cleaning, stocking, and serving duties within a commercial kitchen, storeroom, or dining area. All duties align with NMS’ mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
- Assist cooks, chefs, bakers, and coordinate activities in the food service area.
- Prepare and cook vegetables, entrees, coffee, sauces, meats, etc.
- Prepare foods for breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee drinks, sandwiches, salads, and other items.
- Maintain products at required levels in preparation, serving, or storage areas.
- Stock food service areas with necessary products and materials.
- Clean dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and store them properly.
- Wash objects manually or with cleaning equipment.
- Clean and sanitize dining, kitchen, storage, and equipment areas, including floors.
- Assist with scheduled large cleaning projects.
- Remove garbage from designated areas.
- Set up, break down, and clean tables, serving lines, and display cases.
- Occasionally prepare food or cook items as needed.
- May perform additional duties such as housekeeping or janitorial tasks.
- Report safety and sanitation issues to a supervisor.
- This role has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum two years of experience in a commercial kitchen or vocational training demonstrating knowledge of cleaning and food prep.
- Obtain Alaska Food Workers Card and/or ServSafe Certification upon hire.
- Pass pre-employment requirements including drug test, physical, and hearing assessment.
- Ability to work as part of a team and make decisions independently.
- Ability to stand for 12 hours per shift.
- Willingness to live in dormitory-style accommodations and meet cleanliness standards.
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations.
Residing outside Anchorage: Pre-employment testing in Anchorage; travel expenses covered by employee. For Alaska residents, testing scheduled locally unless unavailable.
Travel to Remote Locations: Employees cover travel expenses to reporting points (e.g., Anchorage).
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoor/Outdoor, Arctic conditions.
Noise: Moderate to loud.
Environment: Industrial kitchen in a remote camp.
Physical demands include standing, walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, and other manual tasks.
- Lift 50 lbs from various heights, carry 20 lbs for 20 feet, push with 50 lbs force.
- Perform repetitive movements such as stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and stair climbing.
