Job Description

The Remote Chef manages kitchen staff by fostering a positive and safe working environment. They ensure staff receive proper training, guidance, and leadership to perform their duties effectively and deliver quality services. All responsibilities are aligned with NMS's mission, vision, values, and departmental policies.

Responsibilities
  1. Selects and develops recipes based on the type of food to be prepared, using personal knowledge and experience.
  2. Cooks or prepares food according to recipes.
  3. Prepares, cooks, and serves meats, sauces, vegetables, soups, and other foods.
  4. Carves meats.
  5. Maintains cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas.
  6. Communicates effectively with clients and employees to improve service quality, resolve problems, and facilitate service acceptance and implementation.
  7. Adheres to NMS safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  8. Coordinates with safety personnel to exchange information and promote a positive safety culture.
  9. Provides safety training and guidance to staff, enforcing policies and procedures.
  10. Supports safety programs by planning and implementing policies to reduce workplace injuries and damages.
  11. Conducts safety meetings and disseminates safety information.
  12. Documents safety-related issues and assists in investigations as needed.
  13. Supervises up to 30 staff in a remote camp environment, delegating responsibilities appropriately.
  14. Notifies supervisors if safety or sanitation standards are not met.
  15. Performs other relevant duties to ensure departmental success.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED, supplemented by formal training or equivalent experience.
  • Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts or recognized certification; without it, three years of leadership experience in a remote or commercial kitchen.
  • Minimum of five years of restaurant cooking experience, demonstrating high-volume food production and supervisory skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record for the past three years.
  • Ability to instruct and train others, multitask effectively.
  • Obtain Alaska Food Workers Card and/or ServSafe Certification upon hire.
  • Pass pre-employment requirements including drug testing, physical, and medical assessments.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and make quick decisions independently.
  • Stand for 12 hours per shift, live in dormitory settings, and meet cleanliness standards.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).

Note for Candidates Outside Anchorage and Fairbanks: Pre-employment testing and travel expenses are the candidate's responsibility. Anchorage is the point of hire for testing purposes, with travel expenses to remote locations borne by employees.

Working Conditions: Indoor/outdoor environment, often in arctic conditions, with moderate to loud noise levels. Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing stairs, and working in extreme weather conditions.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and perform physical movements as specified.
