Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Backend Engineer to build and operate critical fintech infrastructure. You will design distributed backend systems and APIs for stablecoin-based payments, working with cloud platforms and cross-functional partners to deliver secure, scalable solutions.

You will own projects end-to-end as the Directly Responsible Individual, improving performance and reliability while collaborating with Product, Design, Infrastructure, and Compliance.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of software engineering experience building and operating backend systems, ideally in fintech, payments, or crypto.
• Proficiency in backend languages (e.g., Go, Java) and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP), with hands-on experience designing distributed systems and APIs.
• Track record of serving as DRI for technical projects, driving end-to-end delivery from system design through production deployment.
• Experience integrating with or building on blockchain or crypto technologies such as stablecoins, on-chain payments, or smart contract platforms (e.g., Ethereum, Solana, Base).
• Demonstrated ability to write technical design documents and communicate architecture trade-offs to product and engineering stakeholders.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Own key projects end-to-end as the Directly Responsible Individual, driving stablecoin-based money movement features from system design through production deployment with high accountability.
• Build backend systems, infrastructure, and internal/external APIs that enable businesses and partners to embed stablecoin-powered payments into their products.
• Partner with Product, Design, Infrastructure, and Compliance to translate requirements into robust, scalable solutions that balance speed, security, and regulatory needs.
• Execute performance, scalability, and reliability improvements across distributed systems, identifying bottlenecks and driving fixes before they impact customers.
• Support the team's engineering quality through code reviews, architectural best practices, and contributing to patterns that raise the technical bar.
