Job Title: Contract Attorney
Our client, a prestigious government agency, is seeking contract attorneys who are barred and in good standing in any state, with 2+ years of litigation experience, to work remotely on a 1+ year assignment starting in January 2025.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare for and/or try complex cases involving significant precedents, novel and complicated legal and factual determinations, or with substantial legal, policy, or financial implications.
- Determine the advisability of presenting witnesses and the admissibility of evidence, along with legal strategy considerations.
- Provide training to field staff and the Committee on Special Education (CSE) clinical staff on compliance with federal and state education laws and regulations.
- Consult with special education specialists, technical experts, and other attorneys, including litigant counsel.
- Negotiate and implement settlements for special education claims.
- Prepare and argue difficult cases and appeals in administrative tribunals.
- Review, revise, and approve agreements prepared by other attorneys.
- Draft memoranda seeking fiscal settlement authority.
- Analyze the strength of impartial hearing cases and evaluate plaintiffs’ demands.
- Instruct relevant offices on obligations to parents and students following impartial hearing orders.
- Review internal settlement recommendations and gather evidence for case research.
- Appear at pre-hearing conferences and review administrative decisions.
- Research state and federal case law relevant to settlement negotiations.
- Collaborate with advocacy groups, parents, and private attorneys to reach mutually beneficial settlements.
- Review, revise, and approve stipulations of settlement and claims for attorney’s fees.
- Prepare reports, statistical data, and case recommendations.
- Review requests for pendency and other administrative decisions.
Additional Requirements:
- Admitted and in good standing in any state.
- Efficient legal research skills.
- Professionalism, including providing a two-week notice when leaving the assignment.
- Computer literacy: troubleshooting, data entry in Excel, good Wi-Fi, familiarity with Microsoft Teams and Outlook.
- Handling a large caseload of 100-200 cases.
Position Details:
- Full-time, Monday through Friday, 40 hours/week (no overtime).
- Reporting based on NYC/eastern time zone.
Salary:
- $41.75/hr for attorneys with 1-7 years of experience.
- $43.75/hr for attorneys with 7+ years of experience.
