Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Remote Android Team Lead to own core product features, write code, review others, and drive delivery end-to-end. You will lead reliability efforts, review PRs, and unblock the team, while ensuring high-quality releases and collaboration across Product, Design, and Engineering.

The ideal candidate brings 5+ years in software engineering with hands-on Android/Kotlin expertise, strong communication, and a track record of shipping long-running background work and UI/UX

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
• Understanding the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
• Experience introducing lasting improvements to a team and the costs involved
• Comfort with advocating changes and managing friction
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents
• Product design intuition and user empathy for Android UI/UX beyond the spec
• Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond what's outlined in the spec
• Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, working with design from decision to release.
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when they are stuck and drive progress.
• Coordinate versioning so the team uses a common approach.
• Keep shared code clean, tested, and reusable.
• Lead changes in processes when appropriate.
• Reduce manual steps to ensure correct releases.
• Address recurring problems by changing underlying setups.
• Advance automated verifications before QA.
• Plan sprints to focus on undecided work.
• Estimate review effort and set critical sign-offs.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering early.
• Handle critical issues and nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers and provide learning opportunities.
