Job summary

Empire Livestock LLC. in Austin, TX seeks a relief/backup driver to cover vacations and staffing gaps. You will operate straight trucks or pup trucks, deliver to schools, grocery stores, nursing homes, and other customers, and ensure safe, on-time deliveries according to route schedules.

You will maintain vehicle safety, complete daily paperwork, and communicate with supervisors. The role requires a Class B CDL with Air Brake, knowledge of DOT rules, and the ability to read and write English.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Up to 2 years of experience driving a straight truck or pup truck, within the last 5 years preferred.
• Must meet DFA and DOT requirements.
• Certification and/or License – valid Class B/CDL with Air Brake

Responsibilities

• Operate a commercial motor vehicle in DOT and DFA compliance.
• Deliver pre-ordered or unscheduled products to customers per route and expectations.
• Follow designated routes and report delays due to road conditions or breakdowns.
• Load/unload as required and assist with stocking/rotation of product.
• Complete daily DOT and customer paperwork including driver logs and delivery tickets.
• Ensure loads are secured and vehicle is maintained and clean.
• Provide merchandising support and promote new products when appropriate.
• Maintain positive relations with customers and resolve issues with supervisors.

Job description

Provide relief/backup support for company when drivers are on vacation or other time off. May provide on‑call relief, cover partial trips or fill in due to staffing needs. Demonstrate knowledge of multiple delivery routes and possess necessary qualifications and experience to drive class B vehicles per the relief driving assignment. Keep up‑to‑date knowledge of routes, which may include going on route ride(s) to keep active knowledge. Operate a straight truck or pup truck to deliver products in a safe and timely manner to customers according to the delivery route schedule as determined by the supervisor. Demonstrate high standards of customer service. Communicate frequently with peers, supervisors, and others.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate a commercial motor vehicle in compliance with DOT and DFA rules, regulations and policies adhering to all safety practices
• Deliver pre‑ordered or unscheduled (special orders) products to customers (schools, grocery stores, nursing homes, etc.) according to route schedule and customer delivery expectations (e.g., put deliveries inside coolers and walk‑ins) in a safe and timely manner
• Follow designated routes and schedules unless otherwise directed by supervisory personnel. Report delivery delays to management due to road conditions, accidents or breakdowns
• Based on route design, load and unload product as required at designated stops (manually with hook, 2‑wheel cart and/or pallet jack); may include stocking, rotating, and/or ordering of product (varies from route to route)
• Collect empty cases
• Provide merchandising support based on customer requirements and promote the addition and sales of new products if appropriate
• Communicate effectively and maintain good relations with customers, resolve customer complaints, and report any problems to the driver supervisor or manager
• Ensure and/or perform proper maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment used (tires, fuel, oil check, etc.) and maintain a clean vehicle
• Ensure load is properly secured prior to travel and at each stop and make adjustments when needed
• Complete all daily paperwork fully and correctly each day. Complete DOT and customer paperwork including delivery tickets, pre and post trip inspections, driver logs, trip records, and vehicle service reports
• Submit all customer paperwork and deposits daily, including invoices, load orders, and handheld reports
• Ensure sufficient route inventory levels to meet customer demands while adhering to account inventory control and company distribution procedures; document condition of freight before departure
• Attend all driver workshops and training sessions
• Use company supported applications or systems properly
• Represent DFA positively and professionally at all times during interactions with customers or other individuals

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Up to 2 years of experience driving a straight truck or pup truck, within the last 5 years preferred
• Must meet minimum age requirements
• Must meet DFA requirements for Motor Vehicle Records
• Must meet all DOT requirements
• Certification and/or License – valid Class B/Class B with Air Brake CDL
