Qualifications

  • Must hold a U.S. Coast Guard Master Operator license for uninspected towing vessels.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required for operation and crew transport.
  • Radio communication credentials: FCC-issued license.
  • Radar Observer certificate demonstrates navigational readiness.
  • Attend Advanced Pilot Management (APM) course every 5 years.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise safe and efficient operation of the vessel and tow and ensure equipment is in good order.
  • Advise office of crew shortages or overages to enable timely manning adjustments.
  • Instruct crew to maintain professional conduct at fleets, docks and locks.
  • Set watch schedules and ensure crew follow regulations.
  • Post station bills and muster cards; ensure crew know duties in emergencies.
  • Complete training, disciplinary forms, evaluations and other personnel docs; report injuries.
  • Foster safety culture; conduct monthly drills and safety meetings per policy.
  • Report accidents and spills to appropriate authorities or company.

Genesis Marine issafe, reliable and efficient with the right equipment for the industry's marine transportation needs. Weprimarily serve refineries and storage terminals along the Gulf Coast, East Coast, Canada, Great Lakes, Intracoastal Canal and western river systems of the United States, including the Red, Ouachita and Mississippi Rivers on which Genesis has significant existing terminals.Genesis Marine owns and operates two fleets, inland and offshore, including approximately 130 vessels. Our state-of-the-art barges coupled with the best liquid cargo mariners make us the safest, most efficient carrier of inland, hot-oil cargoes. Our inland fleet consists of approximately 82 barges and 33 push-boats and our offshore fleet consists of nine boats and nine barges and one ocean going tanker. We have a total design capacity of 2.3 mmbbl for Inland Marine Operations, 0.9 mmbbl for Offshore Marine Operations and 0.3 mmbbl for the M/T American Phoenix (ocean-going tanker).We provide a safe and competitive service, adhering to strict operating procedures which are designed to not only meet, but also exceed customer & regulatory requirements.

Wheelhouse personnel are responsible for supervising safe and efficient operation and performance of his crew, vessel and tow and for ensuring that the equipment is kept neat, clean and in good working order. They must also ensure that Company policies, rules and regulations are followed. Wheelhouse personnel must report to the Port Captain any and all violations of Company policy or violations of federal, state or local laws.

Key Duties:

  • Responsible for routine maintenance and operation of all machinery aboard the vessel and tow and ensure that it is in good operating condition. Also ensure that the tankermen check the barge pump engines for fuel, oil water and antifreeze.
  • Must advise the office of anticipated crew shortages or overages immediately so as to enable the office to make timely manning adjustments among the fleet.
  • Must instruct every crewmember to be respectful and professional towards all people at fleets, docks, locks etc.
  • Must set the watch standing schedule for the wheelhouse and crew, ensuring that all crewmembers work according to watch standing regulations.
  • Must post station bills and muster cards and ensure that all crewmembers are familiar with their respective stations and duties in case of an emergency.
  • Complete all required training, disciplinary action forms, evaluations and other personnel-related documentation. Ensure that all injuries, or illnesses of crewmembers occurring on vessel be reported.
  • Responsible for setting the safety culture on the vessel and ensure all members comply with the Company Safety Program and all training requirements. Conduct monthly drills and safety meetings in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for reporting all accidents and spills on any Company tow or boat, other vessels or tows, fixed objects such as buoys or damage which results in cargo loss, contamination, spills or pollution.

Required Skills, Experience, and Education:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must have a U.S. Coast G​uid Licen​se as Master Operator uninspected towing vessels, endorsed for service on inland waters.
  • Hold a valid personal Radio License issued by FCC.
  • Radar Observer Certificate.
  • Must attend an Advanced Pilot Management (APM) course every 5 years.
