Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a Reliability Engineer to support equipment reliability and performance within a steel mill melt shop. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys being out in the plant, working directly with equipment, analyzing performance data, troubleshooting failures, and identifying ways to improve equipment reliability.

The Reliability Engineer will work closely with maintenance, operations, technicians, and other engineers to identify equipment issues before they result in major failures and improve preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.

What You'll Do
  • Monitor the condition and performance of melt-shop equipment
  • Collect, analyze, and report equipment-condition data
  • Review vibration, thermal, downtime, and maintenance data to identify trends and recurring failures
  • Conduct hands-on field inspections using vibration-monitoring equipment and thermal cameras
  • Troubleshoot and investigate equipment failures involving bearings, motors, shafts, sensors, and other mechanical components
  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and failure investigations
  • Develop corrective actions and equipment-reliability recommendations
  • Improve preventive and predictive maintenance (PM/PdM) strategies
  • Build and maintain equipment-performance and reliability reports
  • Utilize SAP/CMMS to review and improve maintenance strategies
  • Partner with maintenance, operations, technicians, and engineering teams
  • Support approximately 2-10 reliability improvement projects per year
  • Assist with implementing and improving equipment-monitoring and operational systems
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field
  • 2+ years of direct industrial reliability, maintenance, or equipment engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment - not solely office-based engineering
  • Experience collecting, interpreting, and reporting equipment-condition or performance data
  • Understanding of root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Comfortable working directly around industrial machinery and equipment
Preferred, but not required:
  • Vibration Analysis Category I, II, or III
  • Infrared thermography certification
  • Machinery balancing training
  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • Other predictive-maintenance or reliability certifications
  • Experience with SAP or another CMMS
  • Experience with vibration analysis, thermography, condition monitoring, or predictive maintenance
Work Environment

This position is based directly within a steel mill melt shop. Candidates should be comfortable working in a hot, dirty, heavy-industrial environment and spending significant time on the plant floor.

Basic hand tools and required PPE will be needed. Specialized reliability and condition-monitoring equipment will be provided.

What Success Looks Like

Within the first few months, you'll become familiar with the melt-shop process, critical equipment, SAP/CMMS structure, and existing maintenance strategies. You'll progress toward independently analyzing equipment-performance data, identifying developing issues and repeat failures, participating in RCAs, and owning smaller reliability projects.

Ultimately, you'll be expected to independently identify equipment risks, translate condition-monitoring data into actionable recommendations, and work with maintenance and operations to prevent failures and improve equipment reliability.
