Job summary

Charles Schwab Corporation is seeking a senior QA engineer (SDET) to own complex test automation frameworks and secure, scalable test coverage for enterprise authentication across web, API, and mobile layers.

You will design automated strategies, integrate tests into CI/CD, mentor peers, and apply AI-assisted tools to accelerate test authoring and framework development. A strong candidate will contribute to quality design decisions and release-ready quality at scale.

Qualifications

• 6+ years in software development engineering and testing or SDET roles.
• Strong experience with Selenium WebDriver, Appium, Cucumber, TestNG or WebdriverIO.
• Automation code in Java or TypeScript; Gherkin proficiency for BDD.
• API test automation with Postman, Rest Assured, SoapUI or similar.
• CI/CD pipelines integration with GitHub Actions, Bamboo or similar.
• POV/test framework design patterns for maintainability.
• Log analysis/observability with Splunk for defect investigation.
• Familiarity with OAuth 2.0, SAML, JWT or modern authentication flows.

Responsibilities

Your Opportunity

As a member of the Enterprise Middleware and Online Security Technology (EMOST) team, this role is designed for a strong, independent quality engineer who can own complex test automation frameworks, contribute to quality design decisions, and deliver secure, scalable test coverage for enterprise authentication capabilities. The successful candidate will design and maintain automated test suites supporting Passwordless Login, FIDO2/WebAuthn/passkeys, Risk Based Authentication, and modern authentication journeys across web, API, and mobile layers. The candidate should also be able to understand the interdependencies across different software stacks. This role requires strong engineering judgment, hands‑on automation depth, and the ability to partner with product, development, security, fraud, risk, architecture, and platform stakeholders to deliver release‑ready quality at scale.

Key Responsibilities:

• Own design, development, and maintenance of test automation frameworks and test suites supporting complex authentication and online security capabilities.
• Partner with product owners, SCRUM masters, developers, and architects to decompose features, define acceptance criteria, and deliver quality commitments across sprints and releases.
• Design and implement automated test strategies across UI, API, mobile, and visual regression layers using modern frameworks and BDD practices.
• Build and maintain end‑to‑end, integration, and regression test coverage for Passwordless Login, FIDO2/WebAuthn/passkeys, Risk Based Authentication, and related authentication journeys.
• Develop, maintain, update and triage issues with CI/CD pipeline integrations for automated test execution, reporting, and quality gate enforcement.
• Apply AI‑assisted tools to accelerate test authoring, test case generation, exploratory testing assistance, and framework development across the software delivery lifecycle.
• Maintain high standards for test code quality, coverage, observability, and release readiness through code reviews and quality metrics.
• Troubleshoot complex test failures, investigate production defects, and support root‑cause analysis for high‑impact authentication and online security issues.
• Mentor less‑experienced QA engineers through code reviews, test design discussions, and technical knowledge sharing.
• Own, maintain and run a set of Performance and Stress test suites in a performance environment and in production

What you have

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of experience in software development engineering and testing, quality automation engineering, or equivalent SDET roles.
• Strong experience with test automation frameworks such as Selenium WebDriver, Appium, Cucumber (BDD), TestNG, or WebdriverIO across web and mobile platforms.
• Experience writing automation code in Java, TypeScript, or similar object‑oriented or scripting languages; Gherkin proficiency for BDD frameworks.
• Experience designing and executing API test automation using tools such as Postman, Rest Assured, SoapUI, or similar.
• Experience integrating automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Bamboo, or similar platforms.
• Experience with Page Object Model (POM) or similar test framework design patterns to support maintainability and scalability.
• Experience with log analysis and observability tools such as Splunk to support defect investigation, triage, and production analysis.
• Familiarity with authentication and identity concepts such as OAuth 2.0, SAML, JWT, or modern authentication flows.
• Strong analytical, written, verbal, and collaboration skills with the ability to contribute to quality design and architecture discussions.

AI Proficiency Requirements:

• Hands‑on experience using AI‑assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot to accelerate test script authoring, step definition generation, and test framework scaffolding.
• Experience applying AI tools to exploratory testing assistance, edge case identification, and acceptance criteria analysis to improve test coverage quality and depth.
• Experience using AI to support CI/CD workflow creation, test reporting configuration, visual testing strategy design, or framework debugging.
• Ability to critically evaluate AI‑generated test outputs for correctness, coverage completeness, and maintainability before committing to test suites.
• Demonstrated ability to apply prompt engineering and structured task decomposition to guide AI tools effectively within a quality engineering context.
• Commitment to expanding AI proficiency through certifications, active experimentation, and adoption of emerging AI tools within the quality engineering domain.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with visual testing frameworks such as WebdriverIO Visual Service or similar tools for screen‑to‑screen pixel and layout regression validation.
• Experience testing authentication capabilities including Passwordless Login, FIDO2/WebAuthn/passkeys, Risk Based Authentication, or multi‑factor authentication flows.
• Experience with code quality and security tooling such as SonarQube, Veracode, Blackduck, or GitHub Advanced Security integrated into CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience deploying or executing automated test pipelines in cloud environments such as GCP, AWS, or Sauce Labs device cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with NIST identity standards and authentication security concepts relevant to enterprise financial services environments.
• Microsoft GenAI certification, GitHub certifications (L1/L2), or equivalent demonstrated proficiency in applied AI tooling for software engineering.
