Role Overview

This role focuses on providing healthcare and support to inmates upon their release from jail. The RN will facilitate a smooth transition back into the community by offering medical care, health education, and connections to essential community resources. Additionally, the RN will provide care to inmates requiring emergency services, ensuring immediate and appropriate medical attention during critical situations.

Shift: 2-10 PM

Primary Purpose

The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients in transitioning through healthcare encounters without preventable complications or delays. Delegation of interventions to healthcare personnel is based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Experience: At least two years of nursing experience. Corrections or Behavioral Health experience is preferred.
  • Licensure: Must hold a current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or a valid Compact RN license.
  • Certification: Current healthcare provider BLS certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
Skills and Abilities
  • Provide patient-centered care following Texas Nurse Practice Act, protocols, and standards.
  • Exercise independent judgment in nursing care.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including with patients, families, and staff.
  • Ability to communicate via overhead paging as needed.
  • Provide direction to non-nursing staff, serve as preceptor, and participate as a Charge Nurse on rotation.
  • Conduct in-service educational programs.
  • Demonstrate patient-centered behaviors.
  • Knowledge of nursing standards for specialty care areas as applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders; serve as a resource and participate in community outreach as assigned.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in patient records and hospital documents.
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff, serve as Charge Nurse as needed, and act as a preceptor or trainer for new staff.
