RELAY TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN 1ST YEAR

Job Standards

The City of Springfield Office of Public Utilities, Electrical Division, in conjunction with the Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC), is hiring for the Relay Technician Apprentice position. Responsibilities include:

  1. Performing installation and maintenance duties related to high-voltage generation, transmission, and distribution protection systems.
  2. Conducting safe and accurate testing of protective relays, Power Line Carrier (PLC) equipment, and other substation equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum passing score of 6 or greater on the NJATC written exam; proof of score must be uploaded with the application.
  • If the exam was taken within the past 24 months with a score of 6 or higher, re-testing is not required.
  • Next available testing date is May 20, 2025, in Springfield, IL. Additional dates may be added based on demand.
  • Applicants participating in an accredited electrical apprenticeship recognized by the Electrical Training Alliance, with a required ETA aptitude test score of 6 or better, may qualify for a direct interview.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Age 17 or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Unrestricted 20/20 eyesight (correctable to 20/20); no color blindness
  • Valid driver’s license at application; ability to obtain Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if required

All qualified applicants will receive a first interview. Hiring decisions will be made after the second interview. This position is covered by IBEW Local #193.
