Job summary

Versys Verified Systems is seeking a Relay/Protection & Control Specialist with extensive MV experience to join our field team across the United States. You will test, commission, and troubleshoot protective relays and switchgear, supporting construction and maintenance efforts.

Qualifications

  • Associate/technical degree or higher in electrical engineering or tech field.
  • 3–7+ years in protection and control systems.
  • Proficiency with relay testing equipment.
  • NICET or NETA certification preferred.
  • Ability to work in heavy industrial environments and lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Eligible to work in the US and willing to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Test, calibrate, and maintain microprocessor-based protective relays and substation controls.
  • Support startup and commissioning of MV/HV switchgear, MCCs, transformers, and generator protection schemes.
  • Troubleshoot faults by analyzing log data, oscillography and fault records.
  • Read and redline schematics and relay logic diagrams.
  • Ensure safety per NFPA70E and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Document calibration data and update CMMS records.

What does Relay/Protection & Control Specialist experience look like?

The ideal candidate has extensive experience as a substation technician, with a track record of:

  • Operating and maintaining medium and high voltage systems
  • Commissioning, Testing, and Safe Energization of new Medium Voltage/ High Voltage Electrical Systems
  • Conducting DOBLE DGA sampling and HIPOT testing
  • Executing maintenance and tests on high voltage systems
  • Tests, configures, and maintains critical electrical power protection systems to ensure the safety and continuous operation of upstream, midstream, or downstream facilities.
What will your day-to-day look like?

In addition to what’s listed above, you will be tasked with supporting their commissioning and construction team during electrical and functional testing, start-ups, and troubleshooting of various equipment. These may include switchgear, motor contactors, disconnect switches, circuit breakers, panel boards, transformers, surge protection devices, battery banks, UPS systems, power cables, protective relays, and meters.

  • Testing and Calibration: Perform routine and complex testing, calibration, and maintenance of microprocessor-based protective relays (e.g., SEL, Siemens, ABB, GE) and associated substation control circuits.
  • Commissioning: Support startup and commissioning of new medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), transformers, and generator protection schemes.
  • Troubleshooting & Fault Analysis: Diagnose electrical system trips, equipment anomalies, and nuisance operations by analyzing event logs, oscillography, and COMTRADE/fault files.
  • Schematic Verification: Read, interpret, and redline electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring blueprints, and relay logic configurations.
  • Compliance & Safety: Execute work under strict industrial safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and NFPA 70E guidelines, ensuring compliance with IEEE and local electrical codes.
  • Documentation: Record calibration test data, update asset health metrics in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS like SAP PM or Maximo), and maintain as-built drawings.
Prerequisites for this role:
  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology, Trade Certification (Power System Electrician), or Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
  • 3 to 7+ years of hands‑on experience with industrial or utility‑grade protection and control systems.
  • Proficiency with advanced relay testing equipment (e.g., OMICRON CMC sets, Doble, Megger).
  • Deep understanding of power system protection principles (overcurrent, differential, directional, and distance protection).
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
  • NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) or NETA (InterNational Electrical Testing Association) certification is frequently preferred.
  • Ability to work in heavy industrial environments, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and lift field testing gear up to 60 lbs.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • 10+ years of commissioning / medium voltage experience
  • Valid driver's license and clean driver's abstract
  • Successfully pass a drug and alcohol test
  • First Aid/CPR, OSHA 10, GHS, Defensive Driving, H2S Awareness
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Availability to travel across the US as required
