Division Overview:
Ampirical’s Substation Engineering Division has recognized national expertise in planning and designing new substations and high-voltage electrical substations and switchyards. Our diverse talents allow us to offer comprehensive substation and switchyard design services, providing tailored solutions to meet client needs.

Job Summary:
The Relay Protection and Controls Engineer is responsible for designing and procuring protective relaying equipment for substations, switchyards, and transmission lines. They ensure compliance with design and construction scope processes, collaborate closely with clients to deliver quality designs, and provide field support during construction as needed.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • 4+ years of electrical systems engineering experience in Utilities or Energy sectors
  • Experience with ETAP, WinIGS, IEEE 88/998
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Inventor, Bentley MicroStation, or Bentley Substation software is a plus
  • PE Certification
  • Knowledge of SCADA, automation, relay settings, RTU configuration, and Protection & Controls concepts is advantageous
  • Experience in the electric utility or petrochemical industry
  • BSEE Degree with 6+ years of experience

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify protection and control schemes for substations
  • Select appropriate protection devices
  • Prepare scopes of work and estimates for substation projects
  • Determine equipment sizing and manage material orders
  • Maintain adherence to customer standards for relay protection
  • Create detailed drawing packages including wiring diagrams, schematics, protection panels, and diagrams
  • Interface with clients and vendors
  • Perform load calculations and support field activities during project execution
  • Mentor new engineers
