Position Type: Permanent Full time
What You’ll Do
- Commission and test P&C systems for high-voltage substations (utilities and renewable facilities).
- Perform hands‑on relay testing using sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150; typical devices include SEL‑311L, SEL‑387, SEL‑487, SEL‑421, SEL‑351S, GE L90, GE D60, and comparable models.
- Own scope for substation P&C testing/commissioning, including outage planning and execution.
- Plan sequences and coordinate demolition/construction/testing outages in live utility environments.
- Develop isolation strategies that enable safe work without unintended operations or trips.
- Direct electricians, relay techs, and commissioning engineers to deliver installed, tested, and energized protection and SCADA systems; provide on‑site leadership.
- Reconcile bill of materials on arrival; flag shortages and coordinate with design.
- Verify field wiring against design drawings; create and track RFIs for design or implementation issues.
- Validate SCADA and DFR point lists with system operators; record results and close gaps.
- Contribute to technical growth and safety culture; complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Attend on‑site and virtual project meetings; collaborate with PMs and clients to mitigate risks and resolve scheduling conflicts.
- Maintain redlines/as‑built records and deliver complete test packages and documentation.
- Handle project administration: time entries, expenses, and status reports.
Required Background
- 5+ years in electrical testing/commissioning, covering MV/HV breakers, power and instrument transformers, and substation P&C.
- Exposure to utility operations, substation construction, outage coordination, and commissioning workflows.
- Proven capability with transmission, substation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, GE families) and protection schemes.
- Demonstrated experience validating P&C wiring in the field.
- Technical proficiency with protective relays: calibration and testing (Omicron CMC 256/356, Doble F6150), control‑scheme verification, CT/PT circuit checks, settings uploads to microprocessor relays, and both static/dynamic testing.
- Working knowledge of relevant standards and practices (NETA, IEEE, NFPA).
- Familiar with testing on distribution, generation, and transmission installations from ~15 kV up to ~500 kV, including relays, breakers, transformer controls, SCADA, and DFRs.
- Experience executing brownfield retrofit work (relays/equipment).
- Excellent verbal/written communication; detail‑driven with strong analytical and math skills.
- Comfortable with computers, relay software/microprocessor interfaces, and common project tools.
- Proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; able to manage drawing sets.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift 50+ lb with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willingness to travel up to 80%.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technology discipline.
- Hands‑on testing/commissioning of substation equipment such as CTs, CCVTs, PLCs, and DC systems (batteries/chargers).
- Advanced skill with modern automated relay test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble).
- Familiarity with NovaTech OrionLX and GE D20 platforms.
