Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Review charts weekly and perform 10% re-abstraction with feedback to the ODS.
  • Prepare global quality control reports and track performance against expectations.
  • Stay up to date with changes by standard setters and communicate them to the team.
  • Escalate unresolved issues to the Manager when needed.
  • Train new Abstractors as required by the CCRS team.
  • Complete basic reporting requests for clients, managers, and directors.
  • Navigate and operate CO Cancer tools such as RCRS and NCDB benchmarks.
  • Verify weekly productivity and data quality reports with CCRS Manager.
  • Perform case finding, abstracting, and follow-up as required by contract.

Under the general supervision of the Manager, CCRS, the Quality Control (QC) Team Leader provides quality control activity, basic report writing, and tracks productivity activity for certified and non-certified cancer registrars on the CCRS team. This individual is responsible for ensuring the abstracting team is meeting quality standards, meeting productivity standards, and ensuring the data submitted to the state and NCDB are compliant. He or she will also play a role in abstraction, casefinding, and follow-up on an as-needed basis.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Quality Control:
  • Review charts weekly and provide 10% re-abstraction, global quality control reports, and feedback to the ODS each week.
  • Detailed documentation on quality control performance (i.e. tracking over time) and comparison to expectations.
  • Research errors and communicate solutions as they arise.
  • Responsible for staying up to date with changes by standard setters and communicating them to the team.
  • Escalation to Manager when unresolvable issues are identified.
  • Responsible for creating a plan to address existing errors (NCDB, State, Accreditation).
  • Development of new QC Edits Reviews and Reports to impact overall quality.
  • Ability to serve as a primary or alternate contact on a Client's Cancer Committee.
  • Ability to train new Abstractors.
Reports and Accreditation:
  • Knowledge and competence to complete basic report requests from clients, managers, and directors.
  • Understands and demonstrates the proficiency to filter and run electronic reporting to the state, the Commission on Cancer, and any other governing bodies that may request data from a client.
  • Successfully navigates and can manage Commission on Cancer tools such as the Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS), NCDB Benchmark Reporting, and is familiar with the Commission on Cancer Standards.
Productivity:
  • In conjunction with the CCRS Manager, the Team Leader is responsible for verifying and submitting weekly productivity and data quality reports to management.
Registry Tasks (as assigned):
  • Identify reportable/reportable by agreement/state reportable/and not reportable cases.
  • Complete all Case Finding functions as required by contract.
  • Abstract assigned cases (analytic and non-analytic) according to standard criteria established by CoC, SEER and the applicable state cancer registry with an error rate of 5% or less for designated major data elements.
  • Use text to justify coding according to Savista/client specifications.
  • Correct all edit errors at the completion of each abstract and all errors identified during Savista quality review.
  • As assigned, re-abstract cases and document errors/issues as part of the Savista quality review process.
  • Enter complete follow-up information on disease status, vital status, recurrence, subsequent treatment or other data elements as required by contract.
  • Meet the productivity standard as established for each contract.
  • Abide by all Savista/client HIPAA regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on experience, knowledge and availability.
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Senior ODS responsible for quality review and communication with CCRS staff.
  • Responsible for educating and training CCRS staff in conjunction with Manager.
Internal Responsibilities:
  • Maintains certification and NCRA membership, as well as appropriate state association memberships.
  • Attend educational conferences as requested.
  • Supports Savista's Compliance Program by adhering to policies and procedures pertaining to HIPAA, FDCPA, FCRA, and other laws applicable to Savista's business practices. This includes: becoming familiar with Savista's Code of Ethics, attending training as required, notifying management or Savista's Helpline when there is a compliance concern or incident, HIPAA-compliant handling of patient information, and demonstrable awareness of confidentiality obligations.
  • Other duties as requested.
Minimum Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) and active membership in the national and/or local cancer registrar association.
  • Minimum 5 years work experience abstracting CoC/NAACCR/NPCR cases.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively within role, independently and with other team members.
  • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills to support supervisors and to successfully communicate quality control findings to team members.
  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible to adjust assignments as priorities change.
