Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients in person or by phone to obtain required information for records and billing systems.
  • Registers or pre‑registers all scheduled patients for admission, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services.
  • Obtains bed assignments and follows up with nursing to inform on bed status.
  • Maintains patient comfort during wait and notifies supervisors if delays occur.
  • Obtains signatures and informs patients about Advanced Directives, Privacy, Ethnicity, and coverage information.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and obtains authorization for services requiring pre‑certification.
  • Prepares charts for visits and handles patient identification per hospital policy.
  • Determines upfront payment or deposits based on third‑party coverage and processes payments.
  • Screens patients for financial programs and explains options and enrollment.
  • Collects valuables envelopes as appropriate and performs basic clerical tasks.

Job Summary

Per‑Diem All Shifts (weekend availability required). Approximate pay range: $33.33 - $39.79. Under general supervision, the Registrar I position is responsible for patient registration, including patient interviews, updating hospital computers, obtaining consent, and ensuring information accuracy. They handle routine patient inquiries and work closely with other areas such as SRH departments and physician offices. They greet patients and process them through to the appropriate area.

Responsibilities
  • Interviews patients in person or by phone to obtain all required information for hospital records and billing systems.
  • Registers or pre‑registers all scheduled patients for admission, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services according to department policies and procedures.
  • Obtains bed assignments from the appropriate department and follows up with nursing station, keeping patient/family informed when no bed is immediately available.
  • Maintains awareness of patient comfort during wait and advises Patient Access Supervisor and/or nursing station if patient cannot wait. Notifies nursing units of patients going to rooms when appropriate.
  • Obtains patient’s and/or responsible party’s signatures on registration and issues required information to patient/party concerning Advanced Directives, Privacy, Ethnicity, Medicare, Medi‑Cal, and Tricare as necessary.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and obtains authorization for all services requiring pre‑certification. Takes steps following department guidelines when required authorization is not available.
  • May prepare charts and paperwork for patient visits. Places identification wristband on patient and follows SRH procedures for patient identification at all times.
  • Determines upfront payment or deposit based on the patient’s third‑party coverage and requests payment following SRH scripting for POS collections. Logs payment, produces receipt, and prepares deposit records within SRH cash handling policy and procedure.
  • Screens patients for Medi‑Cal or hospital‑sponsored financial programs and provides appropriate documentation and referral. Explains payment options and enrolls the patient in the plan as appropriate.
  • Collects and disburses valuables envelopes after determination of patient or family identification.
  • Performs clerical functions as needed, including answering phones, taking messages, chart processing, filing, faxing, etc. Assists patients with questions regarding hospital bills including taking payments at any registration location.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines and maintains confidentiality of information at all times.
  • Complies with department policy and procedure for registration quality, including timely correction and/or leader notification.
  • Demonstrates appropriate problem‑solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Promotes a positive hospital image to patients, visitors, and physicians by adhering to the SRH Core Values of Service‑Partnership‑Community‑Compassion‑Excellence.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area; works safely at all times.
  • Provides escort and assists in patient transport as needed to the appropriate location.
  • Demonstrates competency in communication with patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned by Manager, Supervisor, or Lead.
